A full house for lunch and a packed crowd are expected for Sandals visit this weekend. 1st’s, 2nd’s & Ladies 1st team all face Sandal RUFC at Kelleythorpe this Saturday.
The 1st xv will be looking to make it 2 from 2 in the new Regional 1 North East following last week’s win at Paviours RUFC.
All the squad & coaching will be more than happy with 5 points from last weekend’s opening round, paviors where somewhat of an un-known, and after being 22 – 14 down at half time it would been easy for the boys to roll over. However, a spirited fight back saw the result go our way. A great start to the campaign.
We will be put to the test again this weekend. We have not played Sandal since the 2009 / 2010 Season in North One East, Sandal won both those matches, 24-9 at Sandal & 24-18 at Kelleythorpe. They finished 11th in the North Premier League last season, W7 D2 L17, P43. They started thier 2022/23 campaign at home against Doncaster Phoenix, Phoenix won 34-26.
Driffield will have a few more experienced players available for selection this weekend after missing the 1st week, although after the team’s performance at Paviours they might find it hard to get back in.
No team news at the moment, we will update as soon as we get it.
League News – an interesting 1st weekend in the new league. Alnwick scored late on to Denie York an away win. 13-10 to Alnwick. Billingham built a high score against visiting West Bridgeford, 57-10. Our two competitors from last season Ilkley & Heath faced off at Ilkley. Heath did the double of Ilkley over Ilkley last season, and they are 1 nil up this season, coming out 15-14 to Heath. The other promoted team from last season, Cleckheaton, started thier season with a visit to Scunthorpe, Cleck coming home with the points 26-22. As i mentioned earlier, Phoenix beat Sandal, and the last result is our win at Paviors. Billingham, Phoenix & Driffield where the only teams to get 5 points. Apart from the Billingham score all others where within a 12-point margin at least, could be a tight league, although it is only week 2.
Second team get up and running against Sandal this weekend too. Hopefully the lads have been training hard alongside the 1st XV and are ready to go.
The ladies also play Sandal ladies in a friendly. The ladies start their new league season on the 25 Sept, at home too Sefton Ladies.
KO 1st & 2nds 3pm, Ladies 12pm.
Good Luck to all in Bue, Black & White.
